If you are using a dual boot system with Ubuntu and Windows, you can clearly notice the limitations Linux has. And for many (myself included), Linux is extremely difficult. After awhile I came to the conclusion that I didn’t t need ubuntu at all, but I still loved to look and feeling, after searching for ways to make my windows computer have that gnome feeling this is what I found:

Start with the visual style, if you haven’t already install Uxtheme Multipatcher, this will remove the limitations on your system, in order to install new themes. Then download the Human Visual Style

Go to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes and safe your download theme in there.
Now right click on your Desktop and click on Properties. Go to Appearance and select Human as the theme.
Now change the icons, first install Icontweaker, after that install Ubuntu Icontweaker theme
![]()
Next, change the wallpaper on your desktop, get the Ubuntu wallpaper Here or Here.
To replace the icons for Windows Explorer, first install Styler toolbar(free),get the Ubuntu Human Theme for Styler.
Now get the famous ubuntu Cursor
Now, what everybody wants. The alternative to Beryl on Linux.GET IT HERE, and get that “3D CUBE” effect.
To change the boot screen download BootSkin (it’s free): Get it Here.
And download the Ubuntu Bootskin:
To get Ubuntu Logon screen go here.
For Mozilla Firefox Web Browser, you can install the Ubuntu Theme, forThunderbirdor Dapper Retouchedfor Opera
Theme for WinRAR, Here.

June 29th, 2007 at 9:46 pm #Nice theme…..but I burst out laughing when he said, ‘Linux is difficult.’
It may have been many years ago, but now, especially Ubuntu is easier to work with than installing the XP Ubuntu theme. How ironic is that?

Just ..I’d like to know which of all those things are free and have you tried them. Because i wouldn’t like to have typical problems when one starts to put many things on windows.
Also..I’d like to have a loader like Grub and many of the amazing functionallities i’ve seen people using on Linux.

July 5th, 2007 at 11:29 am #Linux difficult? not any more it isn’t. With distributions like Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS and Freespire its easy, FULLY configurable and way more user friendly. Windows may be the market leader but Linux is objecively far more superior in terms of stability and usability, and the best part… its FREE. (collective cheer)! But beware, once you “cross over” there’s no coming back. Its almost like going from a 16 box of crayons to that big 64 tripple layered box you wanted when you were a kid.

September 16th, 2007 at 4:37 pm #Limitations of Linux? The single “limitation” I found was not being able to run the scanner part of my printer, but that’s a limitation with the vendor (LexMark), not Linux. If companies would develop drivers for Linux, it’d be even easier.
I’m much more limited in Windows. Heck, you can’t even uninstall IE completely due to it being binded to the system. Not to mention the Shell sucks.
If you can’t figure out Ubuntu, God only knows how you figured out Windows (or maybe you didn’t, and your computer is a zombie like so many others). If you want some real fun, though, install Gentoo.

“If you are using a dual boot system with Ubuntu and Windows, you can clearly notice the limitations Linux has.”
I have the same set-up and the same sitcho.
In Linux, you cannot simply download an .exe file and run it, it all has to be done in a long and complicated method.
I still have Ubuntu on my 2nd hard drive, but I rarely use it. When the day comes that Linux is still as stable and reliable as it is now and is also really easy to use and will be able to run standard programs without an emulator, that will be the day I fully cross-over. Until them I will just have to put up with running STEAM on my Windows OS…

yeah, right…. you don’t download .exe… you open synaptic manager, use search to list what you need, check boxes for all the software you want and click apply. That is it. No more clicking. And no, you don’t need to restart computer. Just start using it.

I use windows and linux but pleaaaassse stop that evangelism crap, it’s really sad and pathetic. use what you want to use but don’t call other people stupid for making a different choice. all it show is your own ignorance about Windows as it isn’t like windows ME anymore. XP runs perfectly stable here. And 97% of computer users don’t give a shit if the software they use is open source or not, take a step into reality.

November 13th, 2007 at 12:05 am #I don’t care what the other people are using. At least not if that doesn’t threatnes me. The fact that 97% of users doesn’t give a shit who controls their computers is a rather sad one, but I don’t give a shit about 97% of users. Comments about “how to install something on Linux instead running an .exe”, stability, reliableness and easiness of use of Linux just shows us who is ignorant here. And installing all those things just to get the look (but not the functionality) of Gnome is somewhat silly. And all that including Ubuntu wallpapers. But… yes, one is free to do with their machines whatever feels good. That is if EULA allows that.

Thats why linux will always be the underdog. AND dont give me the theres WINE or CEDEGA or PARALLELS. The point is that ubuntu looks and feels smooth and silky but i doesnt play all your favorite pc games. IF we keep pushing and emailing and bugging and bothering game producers to port your games that we would NEVER ever have to use windows. BTW i use ROCKETDOCK and DESKSPACE and TOPDESK from otaku software to make it feel like linux but i would switch over in a heartbeat if more pc games and apps were ported :

Ubuntu is a good replacement for all other OS’s except maby xp. i will give xp a break because it is right now (if your not a computer geek) a little easier to use and more easily compatible.
Ubuntu though is free and everything you can do in xp you can do in Ubuntu… with some work. i find Ubuntu to be just as easy to use s xp but if u don’t know what your talking bout you can get into some trouble.
vista is just retarded and has too many problems for me to get into. MS-DOS 98 etc. is just old and out dated so thats out of the picture but its very fast because it doesn’t use all your resources.
please don’t attack me this is just my opinion.

You’re right, in Linux you can’t simply download and run EXE files.
EXE are MS-DOS/Windows executables. And most are malware-infected.
In linux you have DEB and RPM packages.
Download, right-click and install.
ADDITIONALLY, you have the possibility to download the source code if there are no precompiled binaries for your distro.

June 23rd, 2008 at 6:19 pm #“CMON people you all know that in linux you can do your work get on the internet make alot of things windows can do but what it CANT do is play your favorite games. Thats why linux will always be the underdog.”
Vista currently has a quite substantial list of “Windows” games which will not work in Vista, many of which run in Cedega. Ironically this means that Vista has the problem which you claim will make an OS “always the underdog”. Vista bugs, Vista security holes, and the constant additional resources required for Vista’s draconian DRM, AND you can’t play your favorite games on it. Sounds like Linux is the OS which is the true “upgrade”, not Windows.
You say that WINE and Transgaming’s Cedega aren’t the same as running games in the Windows OS. I couldn’t agree more. I’ve got a very nice PC game called “Discworld Noir” (based on Terry Pratchett’s “Discworld” series), written for Windows 98. It has been known since the introduction of Windows XP that “Discworld Noir” will not run AT ALL in Windows XP, along with hundreds of other Windows98 games (and now WindowsXP games in Vista).
Cedega, on the other hand, doesn’t care what version of Windows the game was written for. This means that Cedega lets me do something which is IMPOSSIBLE in Windows XP and IMPOSSIBLE in Vista: run “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion”, quit out of that game, and immediately, without rebooting into another version of Windows, play “Discworld Noir”. My entire game collection on ONE OS, without even running an emulator (Cedega/WINE don’t create a virtual environment like an emulator does).
Seems to me Microsoft had better hurry up and “innovate” in its own special way (translation: go buy someone else’s innovations) to catch up to Linux in the area of games, not the other way around.
